Celebrating your resilient and adaptable brain!
And a talk with a former high-ranking Moonie leader
Hello friends!
One of the many ideas that came to me during the BrainMind.org Special Forum was my decision to publicize a new concept - neuroadaptability - to replace the currently overused term “neuroplasticity.” In addition to the old term being problematic in its connotation of petroleum-based plastic, it is also inaccurate in describing the brain’s true resilience and adaptability to new situations, especially for those of us who are survivors of high-control cult groups. My new blog post in Psychology Today just came out this morning and discusses how “neuroadaptability” is a much better word to describe our brain processes as we understand them today; take a look and let me know your thoughts.
I’m also delighted to announce that my book, Combating Cult Mind Control, has been published in Slovenian!
Trisha Goddard of the UK Sunday Times’ Talk TV interviewed me this Sunday. We discussed the radicalization of the American far Right and how to reach out to those in MAGA’s sway; you can find the link to the video below.
This week’s Influence Continuum features my friend Allen Tate Wood, a former top American political leader of Unification Church, also known as the Moonies, and author of Moonstruck: A Memoir of My Life in a Cult. As survivors of the same cult, we share a special bond, and this talk is a fascinating look into the Moon organization and its interference with American politics.
As celebrated in psychiatrist Norman Doidge's The Brain That Changes Itself, neuroplasticity suggests a uniform capacity for change across all brain regions and individuals. But that is not the case.
For those who know Combating Cult Mind Control and my work, you know I was in the Moon cult. However, for people under 50 years of age, many have no idea what the Moonies are about. So, it is important to understand that this cult is still a major player in the efforts to destroy democracy and eliminate the separation of church and state.

How to Combat the Rise of the Far Right
I spoke with Trisha Goddard about how people join cults, the difference between ethical groups and unethical groups, what makes a group destructive, and how cults take over people’s lives, making people act against their best interests. We also talked about my former group, the Moon Cult, which is a global center for climate denial. It’s a fascinating talk, and you will want to listen to it!
As always, please let us know what you think about these pieces or what you’d like to see us discuss in the future. Thanks so much!
